Herbal Medicines

The advantage of Medical Herbalists is that they have access to a wide range of herbal medicines that are not legally available over the counter to the general public. Medical Herbalists are also able to ensure the quality of the herbal medicines they use.

I recently attended an excellent NIMH seminar by Tony Carter, an expert in the manufacture of herbal medicines. He provided very valuable information about the quality of different herbs, how they are optimally extracted to yield most of the active components of the plant, the value of different strengths of herbal extracts and methods to ensure consistency of quality.

This information is vital for all qualified Medical Herbalists to help them ensure that the herbal medicines used to treat patients are of the best quality and contain all the active components of the plant in the right concentrations for the required therapeutic action.

The benefit of visiting a Medical Herbalist is that a mix of different herbs can be prepared that is tailored to treat each individual patient’s condition.  A key aspect of this is that qualified Medical
Herbalists have access to a wide range of different herbs that can be used in the prescription.

The public can take advantage of this access to a wide range of herbs at optimal concentrations rather than the limited range and single doses of herbal medicines available over the counter. They can be assured that Medical Herbalists are able to ensure the good quality of herbs that they use to treat patients.

Herbal medicine will never replace the NHS but can play a part in making the NHS, and wider society, fit for purpose in the 21st century. It’s high time we stopped looking a gift horse in the mouth.
